Before we start smashing dishes, let's smash a myth: This custom isn't about making a great slow-motion Instagram story (although it's insanely photogenic!). In fact, it has deeper roots than your family WhatsApp group diggings.

Once upon a time, in ancient Greece, people broke dishes precisely in difficult moments of crisis and breakups. Why? To show that even when life feels "broken," this break is actually a gateway. In Greek, it's called "Kefi" – that bursting joy that only comes out when you agree to let go of the persona, the swagger, the pose, or, in Ancient Greek terms, the "ego".

The Greeks understood a simple thing: for the spirit to flourish, the material needs to be broken a little. When the plate meets the floor, our daily "mask" also cracks a little, and suddenly we can just... rejoice without filters and without inhibitions.

In Judaism, we also "break" to connect.

Look at this – the Greeks are definitely not alone in this story. In Judaism, too, the greatest and most moving moments are accompanied by the sound of broken glass. At the wedding, we break the glass, and in the "Vort" ceremony (the announcement of the engagement) the mothers break a plate together.

Why? Because in Judaism we understand that in order to transform from "I" to "we," we need to break our previous identity of "single". The breaks are precisely the place through which the Holy Spirit enters, and together with it, the new and deep connection between the couple is created.

So it's true, Athens and Jerusalem seem like worlds apart, but they both say the same thing: sometimes you have to break something old and familiar to make room for something new, bigger, and more exciting.
